Today's journaling prompt, about what our advent calendar traditions were, caused me to cock my head and puzzle a bit. We had an advent calendar as kids ... and my parents are doing it now for the grandkids. I just never picked up the tradition as an adult for myself! In any event, here is my journaling:
"My family had an advent calendar when I was a child. We used the same one for years and years, carefully pressing the doors closed at the end of the season, to store it away. I recall vividly that it was always such a treat to be the one whose turn it was to open that little door and see what was behind in. One year, when my parents went to Norway for a business trip (I must have been about 11), they brought back a chocolate advent calendar. Oh, boy, we thought that was just the best thing ever! I do, recall, though, that although I enjoyed the chocolate, I felt sad that the calendar wasn’t reusable! I don’t know where that old advent calendar is, now. Ken & I haven’t developed that tradition, and my parents only recently revived it for the grandkids. We don’t really count down the time until Christmas; it just slowly appears on the horizon, creeping closer with every day."
Interesting reminder of days gone by for me!
